There is High Clamour For Delta Technical Colleges – Commissioner

Many Deltans are now clamouring for technical colleges admission in Delta State in sharp contrast to what was obtainable few years back.
Commissioner for Technical Education in Delta State, Hon. Joan Onyeamechi made the revelation while speaking with newsmen on the resumption of a new academic year for primary and secondary schools in the state.
The commissioner also remarked at the occasion, that plans were on to introduce boarding facilities to the older technical colleges to enable them admit more students.
She noted that the technical colleges became very attractive to children when they saw the beautiful buildings with well equipped laboratories.
She added that the immediate past governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa took a bold step to bring up the technical education, saying the ex- governor understood that it was not enough to have paper qualification that does not add value, and that there was need for the next generation to have both the paper qualification and skills.
She revealed, “The moment the technical colleges started, the children started seeing high rising beautiful buildings with different crafts that are all equipped, the interest was very high.
“Since I resumed office, it has been tough with request and some children are saying to their parents that they don’t want to go back to the regular schools, they want technical education.
“This is actually a challenge we have, it is overflowing, that is reawakening even the older technical schools, we are trying to see how we can also sort them out to bring up boarding facilities in those older ones”.
“Even with the high cut-off mark that we put, we are still having more than enough children who pass the examination and need to come into the colleges.
“For the last exams for the modern technical schools, we have almost 4,000 students who applied for the entrance examination, and we barely have 1,200 spaces for all students, it’s really a tough call”.
According to the commissioner, parents are also trying to effect a switch to technical schools for their children from colleges.
“Beyond those that wrote the exams, we have parents that want to change their children midway and students want to switch to technical colleges to repeat classes when they found out that one can write WAEC and go to the university”.
She commended the state governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborewori for his kind support to the ministry and education in general.
