The people of Abua/Odual Local Government have cried to Governor Sim Fubara, the state governor to urgently act to save them from the horrors of plying a route that is now a death-trap.
The Abua/Ahoada Road had become seriously damaged posing a threat to commuters. The condition was made worse by flood in 2022. So bad was the road that during the flood, some groups conveying relief materials to the area were forced to stop and hand over their goods to motorcyclists.
Only oil tankers, trucks and pick-up vans were able to easily use the route then. The road which experiences heavy traffic as heavy duty vehicles, especially oil bearing tanks constantly ply the route, has remained unattended to. The situation was made worse as the rains came this year washing off much of what was left of the tar.
Only recently, an oil tanker trying to navigate the road fell causing panic and hold-up there. Cash strapped youths unmindful of possible fire outbreak rushed in to fetch fuel from the fallen tanker raising anxiety among commuters and concerned citizens.
Mr Mark Kikpoye of Kikpoye Foundation who alerted National Point on the ugly development, said the people are facing untold hardship and danger plying the route.
“The poor condition of the Abua/Ahoada Road is caused by the flood that happened few years ago.
“We are calling on the governor of Rivers State, Hon Sim Fubara, the (Federal Road Maintenance Agency) FERMA and the IOCs, the Niger Delta Petroleum Resources Limited operating in the area, the chairman of the Ahoada East and Abua/Odual ocal govern areas to intervene and put the road right.
The road is a state road linking Abua to Ahoada and its poor state is affecting business for communities as Abua/Odual Local Government is the bread basket of the Rivers State.
Mr Kikpoye wants the Ndele Abua link Road completed as intended by the Fubara administration
