The Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Prof. Epiphany C. Azinge, has withdrawn from serving as Chairman of the Technical Committee driving the campaign for the creation of Anioma State.
In a statement issued by his personal secretary, Ogbueshi Dr. Jude C. Mgbeze, the monarch announced that he would no longer participate in the committee’s activities, citing “irreconcilable differences” over the geographical delineation of the proposed state.
According to the statement, the Asagba is concerned about attempts to alter the traditionally recognized boundaries of Anioma, as well as what it described as “clandestine and delusional complicity” to relocate the proposed state capital from Asaba.
“As the Traditional Ruler of Asaba, His Royal Majesty cannot be seen to be presiding over the liquidation and decimation of his kingdom,” the statement said, adding that his oath of office obligates him to protect the interests and wellbeing of the Asaba people.
Despite stepping aside from the committee, the Asagba reaffirmed his support for the creation of Anioma State, insisting that he remains “irreversibly committed” to the long-standing agitation, provided it is pursued within the historically accepted framework of Anioma identity.
The development is expected to generate debate among stakeholders involved in the renewed push for the creation of the proposed Anioma State.
