The Governorship candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 election in Rivers State, Dr. Joseph Obele, has said that recent call by a group of politicians for the next governor of Rivers State to come from the Ogoni/Oyigbo axis of the state was selfish and not in the good interest of the people of that axis.
Dr. Obele recalled that it was the same people that in 2023 policy declared that the Ogoni were not ripe for the governorship of the state when several Ogoni sons including Senator Magnus Abe of Social Democratic Party, SDP, Dr Joseph Obele of AAC, Dr Leyii Kwanee of Zenith Labour Party and Dr Lessi Gabriel Gborogbosi of Action Peoples Party, APP contested the election.
Some notable politicians from the Ogoni, Eleme and Oyigbo axis had met at Nonwa, Tai Local Government Area recently to declare that the axis would be the next to produce the governor of Rivers State in 2017. They included Senator Barry Mpigi, Senator Olaka Nwogu, Chief Victor Giadom. Amb. Desmond Akawo and Hon. Dum Deekor. They are all supporters and political associates of former Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike.
“It was shocking when eminent persons from Ogoni said “Ogoni wasn’t ripe for Governor” at the last election. Some of them even described the four Ogoni Governorship Candidates as not qualified, while some of them said it wasn’t Ogoni’s turn.
“My biggest surprise was the fact that same persons that said, it wasn’t Ogoni turn are the same persons saying it is now Ogoni turn,” Obele said.
He however said that it was the strong opposition of those same people that created room for the present Governor, Siminalayi Fubara to emerge governor.
Obele said, “I want to use their word to say “Ogoni is not yet ripe for Governor until after the two tenures of Sir Simlanyi Fubara, Obele said, saying the resolution did not represent the position of the progressive people of Ogoni. “It was indeed a selfish agitation that will end as futility because Ogoni will join the good people of Rivers State to support Sir Simlanyi Fubara to complete his two tenure administration.
“The governor has started very well and Rivers people will continue to stand with the governor. They said it wasn’t Ogoni turn and we accepted. They said Ogoni wasn’t ripe for governor and we accepted. Nothing has changed that position and nothing will change it.”
