Comish Ekiye, pioneer Director-General of the Bayelsa State Broadcasting Corporation, Glory 91.1 FM, is dead.
Ekiye passed away at the age of 80 after a brief illness at his Baybridge residence in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
A distinguished public servant and accomplished thespian, the late Ekiye also served as the pioneer General Manager of the Rivers State Television Service (RSTV), Port Harcourt, and was at a time Director of the Rivers State Council for Arts and Culture.
Renowned for his versatility, Ekiye was an actor, playwright, broadcaster, television director and producer. He also served as Director of the Nigerian Play House in Lagos from the early 1970s to the late 1980s.
He authored and produced 12 acclaimed stage and television plays, including You Can’t Take Your Wife to New York, One Stroke of the Matchet, Omoro, The Family, Finest Hour, Inside-Out and Obigbo Connection.
A legendary figure in Nigerian stage and television history, Comish Ekiye was also a pioneer cast member of the iconic television series Village Headmaster, where he memorably played the role of the uncompromising Chief Odunuga.
Burial arrangements will be announced later by the Ekiye/Engogfie family of Adagbabiri Federated Community.
