President of the World Medical Association (WMA), Dr. Osahon Enabulele has informed that very soon physicians who distinguish themselves by adding more value and ideas to the advancement of the profession will be honoured with the Global Excellence Award (GEA).
Dr. Enabulele said part of the strategies the current leadership of WMA is adopting is to encourage physicians who advance the profession and are more industrious in their fields are honoured with the award.
Dr. Enabulele made the disclosure at the Annual Assembly of the Swedish Medical Association held at the Radisson Blue Hotel, Stockholm, Sweden, where he condemned the incessant molestation, harassment, intimidation and abuse of physicians carrying out their ethical and professional services.
He stated: “The WMA also intend in due course to see how we can appreciate decisions across the world. We are working to keep that system going. Who recognises and appreciates your sense of esteem and sense of service? We have lost so many physicians in the face of the battle of Covid-19. How many of them have been recognised and appreciated?”
He said WMA is poised to reverse the non-appreciation as it will honour its outstanding members and encourage others.
“I say the WMA is determined to change the narrative and recognise physicians, and to recognise Physicians in whatever roles they are playing that have been of service to communities and to the healthcare system. So, the Global Excellence Award (GEA), very soon the WMA will be looking at it to see how we can create a sense of reckoning for physicians to know that even if all others did not care about us, we are about ourselves”.
Speaking on how young doctors should be encouraged to work effectively, he added, ” I must say that our junior doctors must be encouraged as well, because the statistics show that a lot of them have become discouraged.
“A lot of them are voting from their feet out of the profession because they feel discouraged and disappointed. But, it is our responsibility to pay to offer hope for those in the profession . So that is exactly what the WMA is doing. I charge you today to please study the revised Code of Ethics and find important solutions to the issues that concern us.
“I want to also assure you that the WMA is working around the clock to roll out actionable programmes that address some of those issues. And very soon, the WMA will be undertaking round table meetings to meet physicians across the world to hear from them first hand, their expectations, contemporary challenges, cry and needs and to be able to translate our policy constructs to actionable programmes that attend to the needs of their expectations, desires and their legitimate demands across the globe,” he pointed out.
Thanking them for giving him the forum to speak, Dr. Enabulele said: “I was told that the floor is mine, but I dare say that the floor is ours. I am indeed overwhelmed to see the number of people here gathered for this great Annual General Assembly
“It shows the commitment of physicians in Sweden to the affairs of the association, and of course to advanced quality healthcare. Let me therefore, thank you and your association for inviting the World Medical Association to the annual general assembly of the Swedish Medical Association.
“The WMA remains ever proud of the contributions of the Swedish Medical Association to the affairs of WMA. Swedish Medical Association has been very profane in contributing to the advancement of all the policy constructs of the WMA including the newly revised of the international code of WMA.
