Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funso Adegboye, has said that the police were not duty bound to enforce court judgments unless there was a directive to that effect from appropriate quarters.
Adegboye stated this at a press conference in Benin City, the state capital while shedding light on the circumstances that led to the death of Inspector Onoh Akor, an aide of Senator Monday Okpebholo, Edo State Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a shootout on Airport Road, Benin City after the arrival of Comrade Philip Shaibu who was reinstated by court after he was impeached as deputy governor by the House of Assembly.
The police commissioner said that there are laid down rules and regulations to enforce whatever court judgments.
“Our own is to ensure the safety of the court bailiff who are specifically in charge of enforcing court judgment; we are still expecting directive for enforcement of the court order,” he said.
Appealing to the media to help in educating members of the public on the matter, Mr. Adegboye explained that every court case has to be pursued to a logical conclusion, adding that “this will make the job of the Police simple.”
The Edo State Police Commissioner appealed to political actors and gladiators in the crisis that resulted in the death of the police inspector not to drag the police into unnecessary controversy, saying that the ugly incident would have been avoided if they had kept to the rules of engagement.
He said that the police authorities have started investigation into the incident and have zeroed in on some persons, adding that those found culpable would not be spared
