The Catalyst Committee, a pressure group within the Labour Party (LP), has said for the 2024 governorship election in Edo State to be credible, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Judiciary must conform to the Electoral Act and other laws governing elections in the country.
Dr. Abel Oarhe of the Catalyst Committee noted in a statement that the call became necessary because some people with huge financial bases were plotting to subvert the will of the people in the election by putting the electoral body and the judiciary under pressure.
The statement, which was made available to newsmen in Benin, stated that it is only when justice was served that democracy can be deepened in the country.
The committee warned that any attempt by the electoral body to bypass the law and create loopholes that can be exploited to subvert the will of the people will create disruption in the nation’s political system and erode the confidence of people in INEC.
Meanwhile, one of the governorship aspirants of the Labour Party in Edo State, Mr. Kenneth Imansuangbon has dragged the LP candidate to the Federal High Courts in Abuja and Benin seeking interpretation of the constitution as regards the emergence of Mr. Olumide Akpata as the party’s candidate.
Imasuagbon had alleged that Akpata was not qualified to have participated in the primary or to be declared winner of the primary because of issues bothering on provision of false information and dual citizenship among others. He also pointed out that the issues in question did not only breach the party and INEC guidelines, but also contravened the country’s constitution.
