Edo North traditional rulers have confirmed that the state deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu has made known to them his intention to contest for the Edo State governorship seat in 2024.
The statement was made by the Olokpe of Okpe, HRH Oba Idogu III and HRH Alh. D.Y.E Kanoba, the Egiegbai of Ekperi on behalf of the royal fathers in Edo North. The traditional rulers made the pronouncement at the palace of the Ogieneni of Uzairue Kingdom, HRH Kadiri Omogbai.
It was gathered that Edo North traditional rulers met at the instance of the traditional rulers in Edo Central known in the local parlance as Esan, who had commenced a diplomatic shuttle to drum up support for Esan to produce the next governor of the state, visited their Edo North counterparts.
Edo Central traditional rulers led by the Onogie of Uromi, HRM Anslem Aidonogie, informed the traditional rulers the visit was to seek their support for a governor of Esan extraction.
But Edo North traditional rulers declined the request for support for their district on the basis that their son, Comrade Shaibu, was also interested in the race.
The Olokpe of Okpe and the Egiegba of Ekperi while responding on behalf of the Edo North traditional rulers, thanked their royal colleagues from Edo Central but informed them that their son, Comrade Shaibu, who is currently the deputy governor, had already informed them that he was interested in joining the governorship race slated for next year.
“Our support will be for our son who is also in the race to become governor of Edo State,” they told their guests.
The Edo Central traditional rulers, had in their move to ensure the senatorial district produces the next governor of the state, earlier visited the Oba of Benin and other stakeholders in the state.
