A 49-year-old man has been arrested in Edo State over the alleged murder of his 15-year-old son and the clandestine burial of the boy’s body within their family compound in Uhe Community, Igueben Local Government Area.
The Edo State Police Command said the suspect was taken into custody on 6 December 2025 after operatives, acting on credible intelligence, uncovered the shallow grave during a visit to the property led by the Divisional Police Officer.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly assaulted his son with a stick at about 7pm on Friday, 5 December, an attack police say resulted in the teenager’s death. Officers allege that the man subsequently dug a grave inside the compound and buried the body in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Crucial information was reportedly provided by the deceased’s grandmother, who is also the suspect’s mother. The 82-year-old woman, who lives in the same house, assisted investigators in confirming the sequence of events that led to the discovery.
Police said the grave was later exhumed following due administrative procedures, with photographs taken at the scene. The stick allegedly used in the assault was recovered and has been secured as an exhibit.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for comprehensive investigation and possible prosecution.
He warned against all forms of violence, particularly within the family, and urged residents to promptly report suspicious or criminal activities to the nearest police station.
The Edo State Police Command said it remains committed to ensuring justice for victims and safeguarding lives across the state.
