Concerned about the growing incidence of domestic violence in the area, the Chairman of Eleme Local Government Area, Chief Brain Gokpa, has entered into a partnership with the Healthy Life Development Initiative, a non-governmental organization to curb the menace.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman, Hon. Udeme Obot, the partnership will provide advocacy against sexual and gender-based violence, with a focus on protecting women and children.
Obot said, “During a courtesy call at his office, Chief Gokpa emphasized the council’s commitment to tackling domestic violence, stating that they will not stand idly by while couples take the law into their own hands and perpetrate crimes against humanity. He reiterated the importance of promoting a safe and secure environment for all residents.”
The coordinator of the Healthy Life Development Initiative, Dr. Mfon C. Utin, expressed her gratitude to Chief Gokpa for his willingness to partner with the organization.
She announced plans to establish a response team that will work to prevent violence against women and children, providing a vital support system for victims.
“This initiative is a welcome move, particularly in light of the increasing cases of domestic violence reported in the area.
“This partnership with the Healthy Life Development Initiative demonstrates his commitment to addressing the pressing issues affecting the community,” Obot said.
The partnership came two days after the Chairman of the local government spearheaded the arrest of a man from Alesa ward who was caught on a video tying up and flogging his five-year-old son in the presence of his wife, the boy’s mother.
