Ese Usamali Foundation For Rural Development (EUFORDe), a non-governmental organization with the vision to integrate the rights and capacities of youth, women, vulnerable children and underprivileged in the socio-economic planning and development of communities, has held a three-day Early Warning Sensitization Workshop for women in the Orashi region of Rivers State affected by the 2020 to 2022 flood.
The workshop drew women from all LGAs in the flood prone areas. The program, which was conducted in collaboration with Agricultural Development Program (ADP) Rivers State and Ahoada Health Center with support from Trykod Engineering and Construction Company and Fab Photography, sensitized women on the 2023 NIMET flood prediction to ascertain their level of awareness and preparedness.
The organizer of the programme, Mrs. Mercy Okuanyono Elemchukwu said the objective was achieved noting that community women are now aware but are handicapped in terms of preparedness due to lack of funds.
EUFORDe called on government, corporate organizations, non-governmental organizations, International communities and stakeholders to come to the aid of community people.
It said there is need for government to undertake long term strategies to combat and cushion flooding and its impact.
The women were also sensitized on issues relating to health and gender based violence (GBV), which are effects of flooding, an impact of climate change.
The foundation also conducted tours to Ahoada East Local Government Council, Ahoada East Local Government Education Authority and schools, to distribute education materials to children affected by the floods.
