The bills are:
1. The Rivers State Prohibition of the Curtailment of Women’s Right to share in family property Law No. 2 of 2022.
2. The Rivers State Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshot Law no 3 of 2022 and
3. The Rivers State Pension Reform (Amendment) Law No 4 of 2022
The signing which took place in the Executive Chamber of the Rivers State Governemt House had the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, the state’s deputy Governor, Commissioners and members of the House of Assembly in attendance.
The Rivers State Prohibition of the Curtailment of Women’s Right to share in family property Law No. 2 of 2022 stops the exclusion of female children from inheriting or sharing their family’s property. It also curbs the discrimination against widows as it stops the exclusion of widows by making room for their participation in sharing of their dead husband’s assets.
The Rivers State Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshot Law no 3 of 2022 makes it an offense to deny gunshot victims treatment and removes the requirement of a police clearance before attending to gunshot victims.
The Rivers State Pension Reform (Amendment) Law No 4 of 2022 aims to ease the management of pensions and gratuity by the state. It extends the start date of the State’s contributory pension scheme to 2025 to enable the state government address issues emanating from the scheme. It also gives people access to their funds with the scheme within 30 days from the signing of the law.
