A Port Harcourt based Human and Environmental Rights organization, We the People hosted a Roundtable on Oil Companies Divestment In the Niger Delta on Tuesday, November 23. Venue was The Autograph on Abacha Rd, Port Harcourt.
The very interactive session drew Niger Deltans from the region and highlighted the huge harm international oil companies have inflicted on the people and the danger of allowing them to pull out from the communities to continue offshore.
The resolution was that the federal government should halt the ongoing divestments until there is a clear plan and the IOCs have cleaned up their mess in the communities, remediated the polluted lands and paid accruing compensation while all future businesses must be with host communities in the know.
