The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the killing of eight of its operatives and a civilian driver after gunmen ambushed a security convoy in Edo State.
The attack, which occurred at about 10:30 p.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, along the Okpella–Agenebode road, also resulted in the abduction of a Chinese national working with BUA Cement Company, Okpella.
In a statement on Saturday, the NSCDC said the convoy, comprising 12 personnel attached to the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) Department, was providing escort duties when it came under heavy gunfire.
“Armed men laid an ambush on the convoy of a Chinese national from BUA Cement Company, Okpella, leading to the tragic death of eight (8) NSCDC personnel and one civilian driver. Sadly, the expatriate was kidnapped during the incident,” the statement read.
The corps disclosed that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary, while three survivors are receiving treatment at a medical facility. Among the victims was Chief Corps Assistant (CCA) Oluwatosin Sunday of the Ondo State Command.
Describing the attack as a “grievous loss,” the NSCDC commiserated with the bereaved families and praised the courage of the fallen operatives.
“We salute the gallantry of our officers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty and reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding lives, national assets, and infrastructure,” the corps said.
It further assured the public that security agencies are intensifying efforts to rescue the abducted Chinese national and bring the perpetrators to justice.
