As part of activities marking the 2022 International Youth Day, LightHope Succor Worldwide Initiative in collaboration with the Advocacy Center and Entrepreneurship Initiative for African Youth, A organized a one-day capacity building workshop for youths of Odawu Community in Ahoada West Local Government of Rivers State.
Theme was ‘Intergenerational Solidarity Among Adults and Youths #Creatingaworldforallages.
The event featured presentations on non-violent conflict, non-violent elections and how young people can shun corrupt politicians by not falling victims of their unscrupulous agenda come 2023 and how to vote right by voting for candidates of their choice.
Executive Director of Lighthope Succor Worldwide Initiative while addressing the youths, told them that making the right decision is key to a successful and impactful future. She said they should never look down on their root for it is the foundation upon which their fulfilment is derived.
She advised them to aspire to be more resourceful and successful than their parents.
Mr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface in his remarks defined youth as key to nation building. He said creating the right platform with gender and social inclusion in focus is paramount to ensuring inclusive participation in the change process. He harped on the negative impact of artisanal refinery on the region, the environment and health of citizens as a whole.
He urged government to take proactive steps to ensure the process of the coming transition is done right by providing gainful employment or skills training to accommodate young people that have been stripped of a source of the livelihood they have grown to know. This he said will prevent further crimes such as cultism, kidnapping as well as reduce incidents of oil pipeline vandalization.
From questions fielded by the youth bothering on community development especially in the area of health, water, sanitation and environment, education, it was obvious that they were in dare need of skills acquisition and employment opportunities.
The climax of the event was a courtesy visit by the project team to the local government chairman’s office who welcomed the guests and commended their work.
Women and mothers were not left out of the event. They came in numbers to show solidarity with the youth body.
