Given the densely populated nature of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the new medical officer for health in the area, Dr. Babep Chiney has appealed to government at all levels to provide more health facilities in the area. Dr. Babep Chiney made this appeal last Tuesday in a chat with newsmen in her office at Runuodomaya.
Said she, “I want to appeal to government at all levels to provide Obio/Akpor LGA with more health facilities to enable the medical personnel in the area to continue to provide adequate health care for our patients. We need more health facilities in Obio/Akpor LGA, especially in communities such as Rumuepirikom, Rumuolumeni and Woji communities respectively”.
Dr. Chiney pointed out that more health facilities would improve health care delivery in the area.
“If we have more health facilities in the area, it will help to improve healthcare delivery in Obio/Akpor LGA.”
On training and re-training of medical personnel in the area, she stated: “We the medical personnel in this LGA, believe mainly in the learning on the job training process. Besides, our health workshops or seminars depend on the Obio/Akpor LGA and the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board.’
The medical officer of the council explained that the exact number of medical personnel needed in the LGA would be known after conducting the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) of the council.
“Although, we need more health personnel in Obio/Akpor LGA, we will know exactly the number of medical personnel we need after carrying out the NEEDS assessment of the LGA in January 2024 as well as know where to deploy the medics in the LGA,” Dr. Chiney added.
She expressed optimism that with the state policy of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the effort of Hon. George Ariolu, the council chairman, the state would achieve universal health coverage.
She attributed the high patronage of Obio Cottage Hospital situated at Rumuobioakani in Obio/Akpor LGA by pregnant women and nursing mothers to the quality of facilities there and care provided.
“The high patronage of Obio Cottage Hospital by mothers, pregnant women and nursing mothers is because of the facilities at the hospital and the kind of treatment the patients get or receive from the medical personnel there. Besides, we are also trying to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure for mothers and pregnant women on a yearly basis,” Dr. Chiney explained.
She assured that with the support and encouragement from the George Ariolu-led administration, medical personnel in Obio/Akpor LGA would continue to embark on training and re-training.
She commended the secretary of the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Kenekanwo Green for his support and counsel to medical personnel across the state. She also lauded the state commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh for effective health care delivery since she assumed office last year.
