An oil facility in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State experienced a second explosion within 12 hours, intensifying concerns over pipeline safety and security in the region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at a manifold connected to a federal pipeline in the Okwawriwa area of ONELGA, resulting in a massive blaze that sent flames soaring into the sky.
According to eyewitness accounts, the affected facility serves as a critical conduit for petroleum products transported from Seplat, Agip, and Shell, supplying ONELGA, parts of Imo State, and extending to Brass in Bayelsa State. Fortunately, its remote location significantly reduced the risk of casualties.
This latest explosion follows a similar blast at the Trans-Niger Pipeline, operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), which carries crude oil to the Bonny Terminal. The earlier incident, which took place in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area, has already prompted an investigation by law enforcement agencies.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed that two individuals have been detained for questioning in connection with the Trans-Niger Pipeline explosion. However, the exact causes of both incidents remain undetermined as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, growing concerns persist regarding the potential consequences of these explosions on the oil and gas industry, local communities, and the environment. Stakeholders have urged the Rivers State Government and relevant authorities to take immediate action to prevent future occurrences and safeguard critical infrastructure.
