Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has turned the MOWAA controversy into a political party affair by appointing APC leaders as Chairman and members of the fact‑finding committee.
The committee members were announced in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor.
The fact‑finding committee is chaired by former Governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole, APC leader for Edo North. Retired Major‑General Cecil Esekhaigbe, APC leader for Edo Central, serves as vice‑chairman of the committee.
Other members of the committee are Lucky Imasuen, APC Edo South leader, former deputy governor, Pastor Osagie Ize‑Iyamu–, former SSG and APC Leader in Edo South , Roland Itoyah Otaru, SAN, Attorney‑General and Commissioner of Justice.
However observers have said that the state government should have better left the matter for the House of Assembly that was already investigating the case.
Ikhilor explained that the series of protests and petitions from members of the public, including eminent individuals from the Benin Royal Palace and Traditional Council, concerning the operations and governance structure of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) necessitated the probe.
He further said that it was in response, and in recognition of the Benin Royal Palace as the true and lawful custodian of the cultural heritage and artifacts of the Benin Kingdom.
The state government reiterated its commitment to protecting the cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom “while ensuring transparency, accountability, and mutual respect in all partnerships and heritage-related initiatives.”
The mandate of the committee, according to the SSG, are “Interface with international donors, partners, and trustees of MOWAA to; Ascertain the true legal and operational status of MOWAA; Clarify the position, rights, and stake of the Benin Royal Palace and Traditional Institution in the museum project; and Make appropriate recommendations to the State Government for further action”.
The Committee is expected to start work instant and submit its findings and recommendations within the shortest possible time.
