Esther Godday, an expectant mother, has been arrested by the police in Rivers State for allegedly stabbing to death one Mrs. Imeran Idema for trying to stop her from escaping with a bunch of plantain she stole from a farm.
Godday, a mother of nine, committed the alleged offence on January 28, at Agada village in Abua, Rivers State.
Desperate to feed her hungry children, Mrs. Godday had reportedly sneaked into the Idema family plantain farm, cut off a bunch of plantain and was escaping when Mrs. Idema confronted her.
During an argument between them, the deceased Idema stabbed Godday on her leg. It was then the suspect dropped the bunch of plantain and descended on Mrs. Idema and inflicted several machete cuts on her before escaping.
According to sources, Idema’s screams attracted other members of her family who took her to the hospital, where she eventually died. But she was able to relate the story before she died.
Her family reported the matter to the police, who went after Mrs. Godday and arrested her.
It was at the police station that Mrs. Godday learnt about Mrs. Idema’s death. she expressed remorse at what happened and wished the death could be undone, a source said.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, urged people to think carefully before making life choices and to exercise restraint in their actions.
