Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RISIEC, has fixed the local government election for Saturday, August 30, 2025.
The Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Michael Ekpai Odey, declared this on Monday during the stakeholders meeting held at the head office of the Commission in Port Harcourt.

Odey said in arriving at the new date, he had to use his powers conferred by the RISIEC Law 2018 to cancel the previous date set for Saturday, August 9, 2025 because of incontrovertible evidence against the initial date set by the dissolved RISIEC board of the Commission.
Members of the Commission were earlier introduced to the stakeholders comprising political parties, the media, security agencies, traditional rulers and civil society organisations.
The Chairman promised that the commission would conduct itself transparently and creditably and ensure that the voice of the people was refected in the eventual outcome of the elections.

He called for the cooperation and support of all the stakeholders.
In the new timetable, expression of interest by political parties will begin on Monday July 28, 2025. Nominations will end on August 22 with the submission of the final list of candidates by political parties.
Campaigns will end at midnight of Thursday, August 28th, 2025.
Runoff elections will hold on Saturday, 6th September, 2025 as well as rerun elections where elections did not hold on the 30th of August. Second runoff will hold on 13th September, 2025.
