The Rivers Women Unite Prayer Group has staged a fresh protest demanding the immediate end to the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State.
Led by Dr. Nancy Chidi Nwankwo and Dr. Vivian Ige-Elenwo, the group vehemently criticized the actions of the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), alleging that the emergency rule is a politically motivated tool to stifle dissent.
“The actions of the Sole Administrator have deepened the political divide rather than fostering reconciliation,” stated Dr. Nwankwo.
“He has dismantled democratic institutions and orchestrated policies aimed at achieving political domination, serving only the interests of those who appointed him.”

The protesting women recalled that a protest by women against emergency rule on Friday, April 11th, was met with force by the police who deployed tear gas and intimidation tactics to disperse the women.
” Bit on Monday, April 14th, a counter-protest, allegedly sponsored by Vice Admiral Ibas, saw thugs posing as Rivers women supporting the emergency rule. The police, who had previously brutalized the genuine protesters, provided protection and escort for the counter-protestors, highlighting a blatant double standard.
“This deliberate provocation and double standard are nothing short of sabotage and the squashing of democratic rights,” said Dr. Ige-Elenwo.
The group also highlighted the economic impact of the emergency rule, citing business closures, relocation of investments, and a decline in the state’s economy. They expressed concern that women and children are bearing the brunt of this economic hardship.

Among other demands, the Rivers Women Unite Prayer Group called for the immediate removal of the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju n urgent and total end to the illegal state of emergency imposed on Rivers State; full restoration of all democratic institutions, including the reinstatement of the duly elected Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, the redeployment of military personnel to regions where they are truly needed, where citizens are being slaughtered and communities are being ravaged by terrorists.
The group condemned the use of excessive force and the blatant disregard for democratic principles. They urged the National Assembly, civil society groups, and the international community to intervene and ensure the restoration of democracy and the protection of human rights in Rivers State.
“Our people deserve peace, justice, and the freedom to thrive in a truly democratic society,” concluded Dr. Nwankwo.
