Stakeholders within the Onne maritime hub in RiveRs State have expressed concern about the safe state of trucks used by trucking companies and agents to evacuate and bring in goods to the ports.
The stakeholders made their concerns known at their recent meeting at the Nigerian Ports Authority Manager’s Conference room at the Federal Lighter Terminal , Onne.
Mr. Awalah Nelson, who attended the meeting, said that the main reason for the meeting was to find ways of ending the menace of the unsafe trucks on the road.
He said such trucks have led to the loss of precious lives and destruction of goods that have become of serious concern to every stakeholder at Onne.
“Very soon this type of thing will not happen again on our road because owners such of rickety trucks will face dire consequences,” he said.
Another stakeholder, Mr. John Elechi said, “So many lives have been lost and investments ruined by these scrap yard rejects. We too like ‘anyhowness’ for this country.”
Trucks plying the roads leading to Onne ports have often broken down on the road, sometimes falling and spilling their goods on the road. A lot of the traffic crises on the road have been caused by these vehicles, some of which are longer fit to be on the road.
With the deplorable state of the road in recent years, the traffic jam caused by these trucks have become worrisome, which has led to people to call on government to look into barring the use of substandard trucks from using the roads again.
