The teaching of the Eleme Language has been restored in schools in Eleme Local Government Area, with State School 1, Agbonchia and State School 1, Agbeta Ebubu as the pilot schools.
The facilitator of the programme, Chief Ollorwi Osaro, said that the teaching and learning of the language commenced officially last Friday in the two schools and would be extended to other schools eventually in the local government area.
Chief Osaro said, “The enthusiasm demonstrated by school authorities and pupils was both encouraging and reassuring. Eleme language is alive we are working to ensure that all schools in Eleme are included in the scheme. Congratulations to our pilot teachers and chosen schools.”
Osaro disclosed that adult classes in Eleme Language will soon be started.
Responding to the development, an educationist and former Secretary of the Rivers State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Isaac Saloka, said the restoration of the teaching of the language in local schools “is a welcome development.” He thanked those who made it possible and prayed that God should reward their efforts.
Mr. Chula Ameeden said, “Let our people be encouraged to learn it for I am proud of my language, and it gives me joy every time and wherever I speak and write it. I speak Eleme in my house, and the moment I notice that you are an Eleme person or you understand the language, I will communicate with you in the language.”
He urged both pupils and teachers to cooperate with the school authorities so that the pilot scheme and the subsequent schemes will be a success story.
Both Chief Emmanuel Ochen and Mr. Awalah Nelson described the scheme as a welcome development and a laudable achievement. They thanked the facilitators for investing in the learning of Eleme language.
Ms. Adaku Osaronwaji said the facilitators should also create avenues where people that were not in school could go and learn the language during holidays
Ms. Queeneth Ogosu offered to be part of the programme and stated that it is imperative that the alphabets of Eleme language be made easily available.
Mr. Samuel Onungwe praised the effort and prayed God to bless the facilitators
