…Bayelsa Electricity Company says 60MW gas plant 85% complete
Bayelsa Electricity Company Limited (BEC Ltd) has assured residents of Yenagoa and its environs that uninterrupted, 24-hour power supply will become a reality before the end of December 2025.
The Director of Operations, Mr. Steve Bubagah Jnr, gave the assurance on Wednesday during a media tour of the company’s 60-megawatt (MW) gas-powered electricity plant currently under installation at Elebele, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
Bubagah disclosed that the project, which is 85 percent completed, is progressing according to schedule and specifications.
“We are making steady progress. At this stage, we are properly locating the turbine based on the design dimensions. We are also installing the necessary accessories, after which the turbine will be ready for pre-commissioning,” he explained.
He added that work on the 33KVA power distribution network was also nearing completion. “We are about 90 percent done with the reticulation of our 33KVA network. Once the turbine is commissioned, Yenagoa and its environs will begin to enjoy stable electricity supply before the end of this year, as promised by Governor Douye Diri,” Bubagah said.
Speaking during the inspection, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Print Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Wisdom Ikuli, hailed the project as one of the most transformative initiatives in Bayelsa’s history.
Ikuli commended Governor Diri’s infrastructural drive, describing it as the hallmark of his Prosperity Administration.
“This site was swampy and bushy when environmentalists first came for assessment early this year. What you are seeing now is a major transformation within a short time. The governor’s promise of 24-hour power supply is fast becoming a reality,” he said.
Ikuli added that the completion of the power project would have a multiplier effect on the state’s economy and social life.
“When there is reliable power, businesses will thrive. Investors and entrepreneurs from other parts of Nigeria will relocate to Bayelsa. Hospitals, industries, and social life will all improve. We must continue to thank Governor Diri, who God is using to bring positive change to Bayelsa,” he noted.
Ikuli also recalled that the state government recently added two new aircraft to its fleet, further demonstrating its commitment to improving infrastructure and service delivery.
According to him, “The environmentalists came to do an environmental assessment, this place was bushy, it was swampy I mean it was not even cleared.
“Between January this year and now you can see a big difference. The power governor Diri promised is fast becoming a reality and he has promised that before the end of this year there will be power.
“Not just power, there will be 24 hours of uninterrupted electricity in Bayelsa and it is going to have a multiplier effect. Multitudes of people will come into Bayelsa State.
“Beyond that businesses will boom, everyone wants to relocate where there is power, so Bayelsa people will troop in from neighboring states to Bayelsa.
“Hospital business will boom, there will be improvement based on social life and all that, so as for me we must continue to thank governor Diri, who God is using to do miracles.
“Just a few days ago the governor shocked the people with two new aircrafts that the government has procured, as for me we must celebrate the man who God gave us,” he said.
