Of the various contenders in the intense, riveting race for governor of Rivers State, a few candidates are without doubt front runners. Some of them make this line up based on their membership of the frontline political parties, the People’s Democratic Party PDP and the All Progressives Congress, APC. The PDP has Siminayi Fubara, 43 years old, who recently resigned his position as the state Accountant General, to enter the fray, emerging flag bearer in primaries that have provided material for ongoing political discourse in the state, for the support and muscle he enjoys, as the handpicked candidate of the governor Nyesom Wike, whose 8 year rule will expire May 29, 2023.
Tonye Cole, 55 years old, a businessman, social entrepreneur and philanthropist,who in 1996, set up Sahara Energy Limited, now a successful Nigerian and African Energy brand, is the candidate of the APC.
Comrade Beatrice Itubo,59 years old, is Labour Party candidate and Chairperson Rivers State branch of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC. The Labour Party is the political arm of the NLC. She has held this position for 7 years. Itubo stands out for reason of her place as the only female candidate of a major political party.
