It has been a reign of awards for the co-publisher and managing editor of National Point Newspaper, Chief Constance Meju. Between the month of November and December 2024, the gender equity and environmental justice journalist has been honoured with three awards in recognition of her works in those two areas.
In November, she received the WRAPA Improving Electoral Integrity and Accountabilty Project Merit Award for, “Outstanding efforts in promoting Gender Equality and Social Inclusion in the Media Space and Community.” WRAPA is a national women’s rights and protection non-governmental organization.
On December 5, 2024, the main women focused non-governmental organization in the Niger Delta, Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Center, honoured her with the Eco-Defender Award.
The occasion was the 2024 Niger Delta Women’s Day of Action Against Environmental Injustice Assembly. Chief Meju has been a long standing advocate for environmental justice for Niger Delta women impacted by long-term non-remediated oil pollution and the resultant ravaging from the now annual flooding in the region, as well as a campaigner for alternative livelihood skills and sources for the impacted women as oil has dislodged their survival sources of farming and fishing.
The Eco-Defender award was presented, “in recognition of your services to protect the environment, fostering solution to climate change.”
Capping the awards, on Thursday December 12, 2024, the managing editor received yet another award, this time, The Defender of the Environment Award from the publishers of The Environment Outreach Magazine.
Presenting the award at the Hillstar Hotel, Asaba, Delta State, publisher and chief executive officer of the magazine, Noble U Akanga, announced that the award followed a 40 year following of the exploits of Chief Constance. The award read, “Defender of the Environment Award for demonstrating Leadership and Excellence in Raising Awareness of Environmental Issues in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria through sustained Advocacy and Uncommon Commitment.
The Delta State Assembly deputy speaker who chaired the event, the 14th annual lecture/award presentation of the magazine, was represented by his ADC, and lauded the tenacity of the publisher who has taken the lecture/awards round the impacted parts of the country.
This brings to four, the number of awards collected this 2024 as another key NGO in the Niger Delta, the Stakeholder Democracy Network, SDN had while celebrating its 20th anniversary, in March, honoured her with a Long Service Partnership Award for her, “contributions that have significantly enriched our journey together, and we are deeply grateful for your enduring loyalty.”
A humbled Chief Constance Meju thanked God for the awards and the organizations for recognizing her contributions. She said the awards will increase her passion for the huge work of addressing the needs of the voiceless and underserved in the Niger Delta.
