…allegedly shot by unknown gunmen
There is growing concern over the safety and well-being of Mene Suanu Baridam, the traditional ruler of the Ancient Bangha Kingdom in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, following reports that he was attacked by unknown gunmen.
Sources close to the monarch disclosed that the incident occurred on Sunday evening, when the king was allegedly shot by unidentified assailants. He was said to have been rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. As of the time of filing this report, details of his condition had not been officially disclosed.
Reacting to the incident, a prominent Ogoni activist, Dr. Fyneface Dunamene, described the attack as a serious threat to the Bangha Kingdom and the traditional institution in general.
“This is unacceptable and constitutes a grave threat to Bangha Kingdom and the traditional institution,” Dunamene said.
He called on the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Dunamene also appealed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to work closely with security agencies to guarantee the safety of the monarch and forestall further attacks.
“I urge the state government to take proactive steps to ensure the King’s protection going forward. May the Almighty God heal and preserve the King,” he added.
He further made appeals to President Bola Tinubu and prominent sons of the area, including Prince Lucky Baridam-Timothy Jnr and HRM Dr. Ateke Michael Tom, to intervene and support efforts aimed at restoring peace and security in the kingdom.
