The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, has charged newly recruited teachers of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB) to carry out their duties with diligence, integrity and professionalism.
Nwagor gave the charge during an orientation programme organised for the newly employed teachers at the White Jade Event Centre, GRA, Port Harcourt.
He described the recruitment as a major investment by the Rivers State Government in the future of children and the overall development of the state, stressing that education remains the cornerstone of societal progress.
According to him, basic education forms the foundation upon which every society builds its future, making the role of teachers critical to national development.
“As newly recruited teachers, you are stepping into a noble profession that demands not only academic competence, but also moral uprightness, dedication and an unwavering commitment to service,” he said.
“You are entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing young minds during their most formative years. The knowledge, values and discipline you impart will shape the character and future contributions of these children to Rivers State and to our nation.”
The commissioner assured the teachers that the Ministry of Education would continue to provide the necessary support, continuous professional development and an enabling environment for them to excel in their careers.
He urged them to maintain high standards of professionalism, punctuality, diligence and integrity in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The Rivers State Government had a few months ago employed 1,000 teachers who participated in interviews conducted in 2023.
The state government also last month conducted interviews for the recruitment of an additional 5,000 teachers for secondary schools across the state.
Meanwhile, a former staff member of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board, Mr. Valentine Ugwushita Cheta Ogbani, has been laid to rest in his hometown of Ula-Ahoada in Ahoada East Local Government Area.
Ogbani, a lawyer and former RSUBEB staff member known for his friendliness and forthrightness, died on February 11, 2026, leaving behind his wife, Ukalina, daughter, Valerie, mother and siblings.
Family members, friends and former neighbours gathered for funeral activities, including a service of songs in Port Harcourt and his interment in Ahoada.
Community members described him as an admirable and sociable young man whose smiles, laughter and openness endeared him to many.
He was reportedly the first lawyer from Ula-Ahoada community.
