The Obi of Owa Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Obi Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor II, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the train accident that occurred four days ago in Owa Oyibu, Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State, resulting in the death of four persons and injuries to several others.
Speaking during a visit to the scene of the incident, the monarch urged relevant government agencies to thoroughly investigate both the immediate and underlying causes of the mishap. He expressed concern over reports linking the derailment to the activities of vandals who target government infrastructure.
According to Obi Efeizomor, intelligence reports indicate that suspected metal and iron vandals frequently operate along the railway corridor at night. He said investigators should examine whether their activities contributed to the accident.
The royal father called on the Federal and Delta State governments to intensify efforts to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for vandalizing public assets.
The monarch, who is the immediate past Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council and current Chairman of the Delta North Traditional Rulers Forum, lamented the growing insecurity in Owa Kingdom, citing incidents of kidnapping, banditry, youth restiveness, and other criminal activities.
“A proper investigation into the cause or causes of the train accident may reveal links to the activities of metal and iron vandals operating in the area,” he said.
Obi Efeizomor stressed the need for government at all levels to strengthen security around critical national infrastructure and public facilities, noting that such measures would help curb vandalism and other crimes while restoring public confidence and safety.
He disclosed that members of the Owa Community Vigilante Group have remained vigilant and are working closely with the police and other security agencies to safeguard the community.
The monarch also expressed dissatisfaction with the frequent description of the Owa railway station as being located in Agbor. He emphasized that Owa and Agbor are distinct autonomous kingdoms situated in different local government areas.
According to him, Owa Oyibu serves as the headquarters of Ika North East Local Government Area, while Agbor is the headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area. He urged the media and the public to correctly identify the railway station’s location to avoid misinformation and unnecessary tension between the two communities.
Obi Efeizomor extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured victims receiving medical treatment.
Describing the incident as tragic and painful, the monarch said the loss suffered by the affected families was irreplaceable and prayed for God to grant them the strength to bear the bereavement.
He further called on relevant authorities to ensure that all injured victims receive adequate medical care and appealed for urgent steps to restore rail services in the area as quickly as possible.
