The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has inaugurated its Eleme Chapter, the 82nd chapter of the society nationwide, with the emergence of Mr Michael Osaro as its pioneer chairman.
At the inauguration, which took place at the secretariat of the society at Ogale, Eleme, the president of the NSE, Tasiu Gidari-Wudil, said Eleme chapter is one of the four branches of the society that were given birth to by the Port Harcourt branch.
He urged the leadership of the new branch to carry along all members of the branch and continue to promote the affairs of the engineering profession.
In his address, chairman of Port Harcourt branch of NSE, Hachimenum Amadi, said the inauguration of Eleme branch “was informed by the need to tackle the difficulties faced by our teeming engineers living along Eleme/Onne axis as they travelled long distances to participate in activities such as monthly general meetings, workshops etc. at our Bernard Carr Street Secretariat in Port Harcourt.”
He said it was his hope that the birth of Eleme branch would help to bring together engineering practitioners within and around the area to further enhance the propagation of the ideals and tenets of the engineering profession in this part of the country.
Chairman of the new branch of NSE, Michael Osaro, traced the move to establish the branch to 2011 and attributed the actualization of the inauguration to the management of the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited that provided most of support facilities.
Osaro said his first assignment would be to mobilize the plethora of engineers in the numerous industries and companies in the Eleme/Onne axis to register with NSE.
In the keynote address, Prof Peter Ukpaka, a professor of Chemical/Petrochemical Engineering at the Rivers State University, decried the huge losses in human and material resources that flooding has caused the people of the Niger Delta.
He recommended that to effectively control flooding and reduce its effects, efforts must be made to construct dams to take in flood water, sensitise the people on how to handle flood cases, clear waterways of silt and strengthen warning and emergency agencies.
His address was titled, “Strategies for Flood Control and Risk management.”
