The Administrator of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government of Rivers State, Mr. Frederick Apiafi, has pledged to support efforts towards the establishment and commencement of a magistrate court in the area.
The administrator made the pledge when the leadership of Opobo Lawyers Forum (OLF) in Port Harcourt visited him.
Apiafi said though his mandate as an interim administrator did not allow him to embark on new capital projects, the council would work with other bodies to ensure that a befitting magistrate court building was erected and court sessions were commenced.
He said the council would ensure that the necessary paperwork for any building secured for the court was done and handed over to the judiciary to guarantee its use without interference.
He said he was emotionally attached to having a court in the local government area and he would therefore liaise and partner with the judiciary head office in the state to actualise the commencement of magistrate court of Opobo district as soon as possible.
“We as council would see what we can do as to work on the customary court in Opobo Town to make it functional again” he said.
Leader of the delegation, Mr. Edward Obomanu, said that the non-existence of a magistrate court in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area has been of concern to lawyers from Opobo. He said efforts by stakeholders to establish the court have received support from the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi.
Obomanu used the opportunity to congratulate Warisenibo Apiafi on his appointment as administrator of the area, commended him on his quality leadership style and urged him to maintain the positive leadership stance in administering the area.
Other delegates at the meeting were Mr. Lawrence OkoJaja (SAN), Mr. Maclean Minima, Mr. Ibigoni Lawrence, Mr. Innocent Brown, and Mrs. Nkiru Onyekwelu, Senior Special Assistant (Legal Affairs) to the administrator.
