As the management of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education continues to face criticism over its recruitment process, vice chancellor of the Rivers State University (RSU) Nkpolu Oro Worukwo Port Harcourt, Prof. Nlerum Sunday Okogbule has disclosed that plan has reached an advanced stage to sack some lecturers who are involved in the manipulation of admission processes and procedures at the post graduate school.
Prof. Nlerum Okogbule made the disclosure at the main campus of the university during the 2022/2023 orientation programme for post graduate students of the institution.
“We have heard about and observed some manipulations of admission procedures in some departments by some lecturers at the Post Graduate School. I want to assure you that soon, heads will roll,” the VC announced.
He also had harsh words for those doubling as faculty coordinators and departmental heads.
“Faculty coordinators of PG programmes, who are also heads of departments, should be relived of such positions. You cannot be holding both positions at the same time.
“It is important we get this clear because the duty of a PG coordinator is very demanding. Therefore, we expect the Senate Committee, Examination Committee or the dean of PG School to ensure that new faculty coordinators are appointed for the PG programmes”.
Prof. Okogbule also warned some senior lecturers against wrong recommendation letters for PG students who have not concluded their first degree or second degree programmes.
He told the dean of the PG School to meet him concerning ICTC issues on the PG students.
Earlier in his opening remark, the dean of Post Graduate School, Prof. Adolphus Toby, said the school’s 2022/2023 orientation programme aims to inform the university on the activities of the PG school as well as hear from the students about their problems and challenges with a view to addressing them.
“We believe that this year’s orientation exercise will address a lot of issues, challenges and problems of our PG students. Because of Covid-19 epidemic which, occurred a couple of years ago, we have decided to keep students abreast with health issues and other related matters.”
Prof. Toby explained that the acceptance fees for all the master’s degree programmes of the school was the same.
“If you have been admitted into the PG School but have not paid your tuition fees, you will not be allowed to sit for exams. With the new system, we can never give you admission letter until you pay your tuition fees,” Prof. Toby warned.
He lauded the VC of the university, Prof. Okogbule for his support to the PG School.
He urged the PG students to be mindful of their grammar for clear and effective presentation in communication and research works.
