The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is owing workers at its Enugu Zonal Office salary arrears of several months amounting to N65 million.
According to the National Vice-Chairman, South-East, Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, the amount also includes unpaid bills for electricity, diesel, office stationery, supplies and other expenditures.
Dr. Arodiogbu disclosed this at the South-East Stakeholders’ Meeting held in Owerri, Imo State, where party leaders in the zone met to restrategise and position the party for electoral victories in the zone.
He said though the zonal office has been receiving support from Governor Hope Uzodinma and his Ebonyi State counterpart, he called for more support from other party leaders in the zone to enable the office stay operational.
He criticized party leaders who after getting appointments or elected into office abandon APC members to engage people from opposition parties to front projects for them. He decried the tendency to patronize new entrants into the party while old party members are neglected.
He also stressed the need the federal government to give more appointments to party members from the South East to allay long held perceptions of marginalization of the zone.
While congratulating Governor Uzodinma and Senator Anthony Ani on their victories in the last off cycle elections in Imo and Ebonyi, the APC National Vice-Chairman said the focus of the party will shift to Anambra State, where the governorship election will hold next year.
“We need to stay committed to doubling our efforts to ensure Anambra State joins Ebonyi and Imo States in the progressives’ family,” he said.
He expressed surprise that the presidential candidate of the APC, President Bola Tinubu was only able to win eight million votes in the last election despite the fact that APC had a registered membership of 41 million. “This raises doubts about the accuracy of our membership register, hence the need for a reliable figure we can trust and plan with in subsequent elections,” he said.
The APC has initiated a training programme for its 37 state organizing secretaries on electronic member.registration across the 36 states and the FCT.
