Suddenly a ghost appears! But it looks like it won’t go away that soon. Worse still, it could attempt to keep the corridors of government busy in Rivers State. There are plenty of questions begging for answers. The biggest of them all is ‘What did we as Rivers people do wrong?’ ‘Who has annulled our right to be consulted and our consent sought, regarding the best way to use our resources?’ This ghost wants to play and is drawing the public into the playground. Let’s hope it will wake our people to get organized and become passionate about the future…
The international day of the girl child is marked yearly on October 11. The year 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of this commemoration. Why did you decide to establish a girls-only secondary school when you already had a secondary school for both boys and girls? What really happened was that there was a study that we did and found out that there are so many out-of-school girls. When we interviewed them to find out why they are not going back to school, because all the schools in Eleme Local Government Area are all mixed schools, we found out that some of them were very shy in the class. If you asked questions and while answering questions they had a problem and did not…

I think it is a welcome development but it is still a “policy initiative” as yet. In my view, it requires a lot of structured institutional management support, to consolidate the new law. Failure to do so, could leave the policy as existing on paper only but totally stranded in real life. First, appropriate efforts should be made to embed the new law in a functional and preventive phase in every part of the state. The government should direct an appropriate agency to coordinate Civil Society and Community Based Organizations to be involved in a sustained campaign to achieve compliance.…

Recent news has highlighted further concerns about the credibility and quality of Nigeria’s largest oil spill clean-up, including poor implementation of remediation techniques and mishandling of contracts. This time, the concerns come from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – the very body which has been working closely to support the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to implement the clean-up, and which is now sadly preparing to withdraw from the project at the end of 2022. SDN’s own reporting, which focuses on on-the-ground clean-up activities, raises a number of similar concerns – and recent laboratory analysis for an upcoming report…
