At about 6pm on Saturday, 23rd March, 2024, I got a telephone call from someone who identified himself as the commanding officer Nigerian Army, Division in Port Harcourt. He said that a tracker of the Nigerian Army, had tracked one Mr. Vote, the community chairman of Okuoma Community, whom the Army was looking for in respect of the killings of the 17 men of the Nigerian Army, to a house in Ughelli; and that the military men had broken into the house, ransacked it, before they were informed that the house belongs to me, that he was very sorry and…
February 21 every year is celebrated as the International Day for Mother Tongue. It is a day set aside to create global sensitization on indigenous languages in a bid to bridge the gap on language discrimination. This year, the celebration focused on education with the theme, ‘Multilingual education – a pillar of learning and intergenerational learning’. According to the United Nations, presently, 40 per cent of global population lacks access to education in their native languages. And the figure is over 90 per cent in some regions. In Nigeria, one can point to places or regions where native languages are…
As the Nigerian economy continues to nosedive throwing citizens into unprecedented hardship and poverty, concerned citizens are proffering solutions on how to get the country out of its present quagmire but the insensitive don’t seem to see reason for change. It took the general overseer of the Deeper Life Bible Church to point the way to his kindred in the Lord’s vineyard. Pastor William Kumuyi at a recent church event announced that it is time to halt the massive focus on building church auditoriums and address the crippling hunger that is ravaging the populace. He urged the church to channel…

On the 12th of March, 2024,…
Your Worshipful Majesty, the only king that knows how to get whatsoever he desires; I am on the dust groveling for you. May you live and rule forever! Anytime I think of you, I remember the audacity of courage and determination; that made you unstoppable. I remember how enemies of this kingdom tried to stop you from taking the throne even when they all knew it was your turn; the throne of your fore fathers, your ancestors. Yes, the gang up was massive, with obstacles and barricades all over the place but in all these things, you forged ahead and…
The vital Eleme section of the East-West road was blocked for two days last weekend when drivers of articulated vehicles protested the killing of a driver at Alode Junction by people said to be community boys. The protest, which began on Friday, February 23 lasted till Saturday evening when security agencies persuaded the drivers to free the road. The gridlock caused by the protest stretched for about 11 kilometres from Onne Port complex to Akpajo Junction, trapping thousands of motorists and commuters that used the road on the two days. Most of those trapped were travelers going to Akwa Ibom…
The Rivers State Judiciary recently issued a mass of queries to its staff for reporting late to an official meeting. Trouble was said to have started when, the management called for a meeting with the workforce, on January 9. The meeting whose notice according to sources did not go round, was scheduled for 10am. Those that arrived from a quarter past 10am, were shut out at the Ceremonial Court, venue of the meeting shut against them. Campaign group says supermajor must deal with oil pollution and decommissioning before leaving. It also questions the ability of buyers to deal with legacy issues, even as the Nigerian Petroleum minister gives the move a nod. Shell’s planned exit from the Niger Delta has been slammed by a Dutch non-profit organisation, which said the supermajor should not be allowed to sell its onshore assets in Nigeria until it “takes responsibility for its toxic legacy of pollution” and safely decommissions abandoned oil infrastructure. Last month, Shell struck a deal worth up to $2.4 billion to sell its Nigerian onshore subsidiary to…

Akoko-Edo Development Association (aka Akoko-Edo Forum) has expressed dismay at the recent spate of attacks on security personnel deployed to Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, particularly the police, by some members of the communities. A first attack was reported in Ojirami, followed by irate Ojah community youths. The restless youths were reported to have attacked a combined team of policemen and soldiers dispatched to their communities to maintain peace a few weeks ago following internal disagreements in the community. Sadly, a police officer lost his life in one of such attacks in Ojah. As the authorities were still investigating this ugly…
