Following the deadline given by the CBN governor, Governor Godwin Emefiele that from February 1st 2023, the new naira notes would be made available to the general public, Civil Society Group led by Comrade Leftis Agho Omobude on Tuesday, 7, 2023 shut down the Central Bank of Nigeria in Benin City over scarcity of the naira notes, which has led millions of Nigerians into suffering and hunger.
The protesters who are presently occupying the entrance of the Central Bank of Nigeria as at when filing this report, called on the appropriate authority to make the new naira notes available to reduce the suffering of Nigerians who are presently going through pains just to access their money.
The protesters also said that in the alternative, the CBN should start giving out N100, N50 and N20 naira notes respectively which, according to them said could also reduce the suffering.
Comrade Leftis Omobude, the spokesman of the group, said it was delibrate attempt by the Central bank governor, Godwin Emiefele, in conniver with the Federal Government to subject the masses to untold hardship.
He vowed that the group will remain at the entrance gate until the head of the Central Bank, Benin branch, come out to address them on the situation, adding that it is inhuman to continue to allowed Nigerians to remain in this suffering.
As a result of the mass protest, all the vehicles plying Akpakpava from Ring Road were forced to follow Sakponba Road and other routes around the Ring road. It would be recalled that Nigerians have been suffering since the introduction of the new naira notes.
