Members of Akpakpava Youth Coalition have staged a protest in Benin City, Edo State to complain about the lack of electricity in some parts of the city for more than eight months now.
The protesters, who marched through the streets to the House of Assembly and the Government House, demanded immediate action to rectify the situation.
They said the affected areas, which included Akpakpava and Dawson Roads, have been without electricity for eight months following the theft of a transformer.
They accused the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) of negligence, alleging they were asked to solicit funds for a new transformer.
At the BEDC office, the protesters, led by Comrade Kola Edokpayi and Francis Irenowa, officials claimed that they could do nothing to replace the stolen transformer, urging them to seek alternative means of replacing the transformer.
At the House of Assembly, Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian Iguodala, representing Speaker Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku, pledged to address the issue with BEDC.
At the Government House, protesters were advised to submit a formal written complaint.
Comrade Edokpayi related the hardship residents had passed through since the transformer was stolen, saying that the absence of electricity has crippled businesses, made the areas a den of criminal activities.
