Johnson Uguzo, Secretary Elele Branch of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has appealed to the chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike to come to their aid by constructing a drainage that will channel the flood water that pools at Elele Motor Park into the Elele burrow pit.
Elder Johnson Uguzo made this appeal in a chat with newsmen recently in his office at Elele town. Elder Uguzo said that each time it rains the park is always flooded.
“Our offices are also affected. Part of the things members of NURTW of Elele branch are suffering from is flooding. Therefore, we are appealing to the executive chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike and his team to come to our aid by constructing a drainage that will channel the flood water that occurs at Elele Motor Park and its environs into the Elele Burrow-Pit. In fact, it will be recalled that the council chairman visited the motor park, for an inspection last year, where he promised to rebuild or re-construct the motor park. Once again, we are appealing to him, to do something about our plight at Elele Motor Park.
Elder Uguzo state that since Elele Motor Park is about the biggest park in Rivers State, attention should be paid to the park by well-meaning people of the area.
He described Engr. Nwanosike as a competent leader.
“We know Engr. Dr. Nwanosike as not only a capacity chairman, but a competent leader, who will always deliver on his mandate,” Elder Uguzo added.
The secretary pointed out that the leadership of the union in the area has been doing its best to care for commuters and passengers.
“The leaders and members of the Elele Branch of the NURTW are doing their best. When we talk about our business, our commuters or passengers are like our twins, and our duty is to care for them. In fact, Elele branch is more than other branches of NURTW in Nigeria. I want to inform you that last December the leadership of Elele branch of NURTW rewarded two passengers each from our three loading points of Elele-Ahoada axis, Elele-Port Harcourt axis, Elele-Omoku axis and Elele-Owerri axis. In fact, these awardees are the ones, who patronize our three loading points”.
Uguzo reiterated that the leadership of the union in the area has constituted an internal task force to ensure free-flow of traffic.
“Although it is the right and responsibility of the LGA to constitute a task force, however, members of NURTW in the area have constituted an internal task force to ensure free flow of traffic in the area.”
He maintained that in the past two years, they have not increased transportation fare.
“Our union leaders have not officially increased transportation fares for the past two years. For instance, from Elele to Port Harcourt,it is still N400 and from Elele town to Omoku is N500. In fact, the duty of the union leaders is to check the conduct and activities of our members. Besides, we are in the process of up-dating the membership of our 300 members,” Elder Uguzo emphasized.
He urged the commercial drivers under the branch union to shun drugs.
“We are charging our members, who will be on the roads conveying passengers from one destination to another to shun drug in-take as well, as be kind to commuters or passengers because the passengers are always right.”
He urged members of the union to be responsible on the road.
He commended the chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Dr. Nwanosike for his initiative and leadership style.
