Experts and stakeholders in the blue economy have said that massive investment in key infrastructure and good governance were crucial in unlocking the vast benefits of the blue economy in Rivers State.
This was the key takeaway from the opening day of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week in Rivers State. The theme of the event, “Blue Economy: Starting Steps for Rivers State,” highlighted the state’s rich ocean resources and the untapped potential for economic growth, job creation, and improved livelihoods.
The Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ, Mr. Amaechi Okonkwo, said, “Rivers State, being just as rich in ocean resources as in oil and gas, should position itself as a premium maritime state.”
Okonkwo highlighted the state’s potential in fisheries, tourism, and maritime transport, which currently contribute about 35 percent to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

He said developing critical infrastructure like ports, fishing facilities, and research centres would support blue economy activities.
The Correspondents’ chapel chairman added that transparent and accountable governance would attract investment, ensure sustainability, and foster a thriving blue economy.
In all of it, Okonkwo said government and other stakeholders must prioritize environmentally friendly practices, resource management and protection of marine ecosystems for long-term economic viability.
He said involving various stakeholders like local communities, businesses, and researchers, is essential for fostering collaboration and inclusive growth.
The President of the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (PHCCIMA), Dr. Chinyere Nwoga, commended journalists for their role in holding public officers accountable and ensuring transparency. She highlighted the chamber’s commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and best global practices in the business community.

The Chairman of the Rivers State Council of NUJ, Comrade Paul Bazia, lauded the Correspondents’ Chapel for focusing on the blue economy, which aligns with the new leadership’s development communication agenda. He stated that the NUJ is committed to setting an agenda for economic diversification in the state.
The Correspondents’ Chapel Press Week has provided a valuable platform for initiating dialogue and inspiring action towards unlocking the full potential of Rivers State’s blue economy. The focus on infrastructure development, good governance, and sustainable practices will be crucial in attracting investment, creating jobs, and ensuring a sustainable future for the state.
