The Deputy National President of the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, NACCIMA, Dr Emi Membere-Otaji, has called for urgent action to be taken to contain the oil spill emanating from the blowout of An oil pipeline on the Asari Toru River also known as New Calabar River in Asari Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Dr. Membere-Otaji, who said the spill was already choking sea life around the area, stated that irrespective of who or what caused the blowout, let all stakeholders join hands to save the environment.

Dr. Membere-Otaji said, “Today 4th January 2025, I had a boat ride round the island of Buguma along the Asari toru New Calabar river and saw this horrible oil blow out. “Irrespective of what or who caused this oil spill the responsibility to immediately contain and clean up the oil spill squarely rests on the owners of the oil facility.
“Despite the immediate loss of income to the fishermen and the loss of marine life we all need to protect and sustain the environment for now and for the generations yet unborn.”
