The Diocese of Kalabari has announced plans to establish Kalabari University, drawing loud applause and jubilation from congregants when the announcement was made by the Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Revd. Dr. Boma Peter Briggs.
The Bishop disclosed this at the Rededication Service of the Diocese held last Saturday at the Cathedral Church of St. Augustine, Abonnema. He said the Diocese had resolved to commence all necessary documentation processes and had constituted a committee to fast-track the take-off of the proposed university, which will be located at Sama Town in Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.
According to Bishop Briggs, the university will initially offer programmes in Social Sciences and Theology, with plans for gradual expansion into other disciplines in the future.
Members of the university take-off committee include Sir Alabo Prof. Kelvin Bob-Manuel, Dame Stella David-West, Sir Ngo Martyns-Yellowe, Dame Dr. Barasua Lawrence, Sir Alabo Damiete Jack, Mr. Ayanate Agala, Dr. Tamunodein Alasia, Barr. Tamunoteinbo N. H. Harry, Sir Labomie Fredrick, Madam Sokari Davies, and Glory Sokari.
The Bishop also constituted an Investment Committee to support the Diocese’s financial growth. The committee is chaired by Sir Labomie Fredrick, with Sir Elekima Ekine as Vice Chairman and Dr. Asweili Kuruye as Secretary. Other members include Dr. Sobiobo Awara, Sis. Akaeribi Omugu, Rev. Canon Soye Young Itiye, Sir Alabo Columbus E. Columbus, Mr. Daboikia Barango, Mr. Krakaye Harry, Sir Alabo Damiete Jack, Sir Alabo Dedeibi Olu-Princewill, Madam Sunjuba Daisy Ekine, and Ven. Dr. Isoboye Amabibi.
The Bishop further announced the appointment of chaplains to various arms of the Church. These include Rev. Datubo Emmanuel Agborubere Jnr. (ACM), Rev. Fanyama Ibieneye (MUWG), Rev. Dabodein Bekinbo (AYF), Rev. Sepiribo Pokubo (Sunday School), Rev. Canon Ibinabo Taylor-Harry (Knight Council), Rev. Awolayeofori Williams (EFAC), and Rev. Joshua Amah (BB), among others.
He also approved several clerical redeployments, including Rev. Emmanuel Agborubere to St. Clement Church; Rev. Sokari to St. Peter’s Church, Ibiapu-Ama; Evangelist Ikoma Dokubo to St. James Church, Degema; and Evangelist Dumo George to Messiah Anglican Church, Buguma.
