Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has assured the people of the state that the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024 is “sacrosanct” and nothing will stop it.
The governor gave the assurance Friday morning during a press conference he called at Government House to respond to the reported police invasion of the state office of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission in the early hours of Friday, October 4.
Fubara, who said he had to personally intervene to stop the police from “stealing” sensitive election materials, condemned the action of the police and wondered what interest they were pursuing in the matter.
He said the election was entirely a state matter and the RISIEC had all that it needs to conduct the election. He added that the police had no mandate to stop the election.
He said the council election was in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment that all local governments must be governed by elected officials, and that the process of elections should not be stopped by any court.
The governor thanked the people of Rivers State who turned out early in the morning to secure the premises of RISIEC from the invading policemen.
A reinforcement of policemen had stormed the premises of RISIEC early on Friday and attempted to take over the premises. But the governor on getting info on the invasion moved there and dislodged the policemen.
