Members of the Golf Section of Port Harcourt Club 1928 have rounded off their 2023 Port Harcourt Amateur Open Golf Championship.
Speaking to sports writers over the weekend at the golf section of Port Harcourt Club, captain of the golf section, Captain Samuel Nwankwo said the 2023 Championship was about the best ever organized open championship of the section because of the competent leaders selected to serve as members of the organizing committee, and the quality preparation they put in. “The 2023 Port Harcourt Amateur Open Golf Championship is a huge success because I selected a good leader in the person of Dr. Patrick Ohia as the chairman of the committee and I also gave him a free hand to pick members of the committee.
“Besides, this open championship by its elaborate and quality preparation was put up by members of the planning committee. This is why I said that the 2023 Port Harcourt Amateur Open Golf Championship is about one of the best hosted in this club in recent times.”
Captain Nwankwo stated that the theme for this year’s championship captures the essence of golf as a sport.
“The theme for this year’s championship, ‘Golf for Healthy Living’ captures the essence of golf as a sport. It vitalizes the whole body and the mind. It excites and tames. It adds life to your years.
“Similarly, we have just created a platform for you to play, network and bond with people of like minds at whatever level you participate in this championship,” Captain Nwankwo emphasized.
He reiterated that the management committee under his leadership cannot thank the sponsors and participants enough for their financial support and active participation.
“We thank you for your participation and, we specially thank our numerous sponsors for trusting us enough to part with their resources to support our engagements or championship. We cannot thank you enough.”
Earlier, the chairman of the 2023 organizing committee for the 2023 Port Harcourt Amateur Open Golf Championship, Dr. Patrick Ohia said that the 2023 golf championship goes beyond participation, stressing on the need for the participant in the championship to explore Rivers State.
“We want to urge our visitor and participants at this year’s championship to go beyond participation and explore Rivers State. There are so many investment opportunities in this state. And our new governor, Sir Simininalayi Fubara has promised an investment friendly state. Please come and join us as we develop Rivers State together,” he announced.
Dr. Ohia said one of the ways to improve the internally generated revenue base of the state is to rebuild and complete the abandoned Hotel Olympia.
“When we had the Hotel Olympia in the Garden City, people travelled from all parts of the world to Port Harcourt and lodged at the then Hotel Olympia but, today people travel to Uyo in Akwa Ibom State and lodge at Le Meridian Hotel, Uyo and lodge and on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, play golf and leave.”
He called on all who can to put their differences aside and help make Hotel Olyapia come alive again.
“Irrespective of the political differences among the political class in the state. I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to them to put aside their differences and complete the abandoned Hotel Olympia in order to improve our state internally generated revenue through tourism by the tourists and visitors who will lodge at the Hotel Olympia when completed,” Dr. Ohia pleaded.
The chairman explained that the members of the organizing committee were able to raise more than two times the sum of money they needed than the previous championship, pointing out that this was made possible by the efforts of individual sponsors and corporate sponsors.
He commended the participants of the 2023 Port Harcourt Amateur Open Golf Championship for their active participation, promising that the next edition will be better and bigger.
On his part, winner of the 2023 Championship, Mr. Lucky Emmanuel said he is happy to have won the championship because he had made about 2 to 3 attempts to win the championship in the past, promising to consolidate on his feat.
He lauded the leaders of the section for the opportunity.
