…inaugurate new national executives
Former students of the famous Baptist High School, Port have committed themselves to restoring the glory of their alma mater, even as they called on Rivers State Government to take back the school from the church.
The commitments were made at the 2026 Reunion of the former students, where a new national executive committee of the Baptist High School, Port Harcourt Old Students Association was under the leadership of Omubo Fubara Whyte.

The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Prof. Ngozi Odu, who was the special guest of honour, lamented the current state of the school and urged everyone to work together to restore the facilities of the school.
Prof. Odu, herself an old student of the school, urged the new national executives to raise the bar and work as a team. “Write your names in the legacies of Baptist High School that you would look back in decades to say, I made the school proud,” she said.
She said alumni associations are known to take over schools. “Let this be a good example, and a good legacy… Make today a turning point for that school. Three, four people can adopt one hostel… Let that school not die.”

The Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Environment, Sakpenwa/Koroma, Prof. Don Baradam, said the inauguration of the new national executives was a call to duty. “Our school provided the bedrock upon which we build our families and lives. It is now our duty to ensure that tghs foundation remains strong, vibrant and capable of nurturing future generations who are training to succeed us,” he said.
He urged the incoming national executive committee to set aside January 19 each year as the Founders day of the school, since the school was established on January 19, 1948.
The new national president of BHSPHOSA, Omubo Whyte, said he would build on the legacies of the outgone executive and pursue initiatives that would strengthen the association.

One area of priority, he said, will be in encouraging development projects in the school through collective efforts of old students, and another would be to work with Rivers State Government to take over the school by the government.
Awards were presented to prominent old students among who were Amb. Kio Amieyeofori, Arc. Harcourt Adukeh, Prof. Don Baridam, Alabo Sokipiri Graham Douglas, Justice Iche Ndu and Justice Ambrose Lewis-Allagoa.
Baptist High School, Port Harcourt was founded in 1948 by the Baptist Mission.
