As the national executive of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), suspended four of its members for professional misconduct, chairman of the Rivers State branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Anele Promise Enyi has lauded the immediate past president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari for signing the 2022 Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Bill into law.
Speaking to National Point recently in an exclusive interview, he said that the 2022 Pharmacy Council Act of Nigeria would now replace the old Pharmacists Council of Nigeria.
Anele explained that the benefit of the new Act is huge.
“The new Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Law will also regulate the standard of training and practice of pharmacy and other related matters”.
According to him, “There will be proper regulation of several issues in the country. It will regulate both the practice and the education or study of pharmacy.’
Pharm Anele stated that no matter the circumstances and season drugs are to be monitored from the production to distribution and to the consumption stage, stressing on the need for a thorough distribution chain among drug dealers. “If we have a functional distribution chain, it will help to check drugs that have issues. We also expect that the standard of operation will also be adequately enforced in Nigeria.’
The chairman pointed out that with the new law on drugs the issue of open drug market would stop.
“Open drug market has been a long standing issue. The chaotic drug distribution is also an issue or a problem in this country. However, I believe that with this law enacted now, all these issues will stop.”
Anele went further; “I believe that with the new Pharmacy Council Act, patent medicine dealers are now to obey and comply.”
The chairman also hinted that in some states such as Bayelsa State and Anambra states, the governments there now have coordinated centre where drugs received are being stored.
He commended the permanent secretary ministry of Health, Dr. (Mrs.)Ndidi Chikanele Emma Utchay for bringing all medical workers in Rivers State together during the 2023 medical workers conference.
