…list 9 items of gross misconduct against the governor
The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday kicked off the process of removing the Governor, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, from office after listing nine points of gross misconduct against him.
The motion for the impeachment of the governor was moved by Mr. Major Jack, the Majority Leader representing Akuku-Toru constituency.

In a plenary that was beamed live on Channels TV and Arise TV, the majority leader said the Governor had refused to implement the financial autonomy law on the judiciary and legislature, starved the House of Assembly commission of funds, and carried out extra-budgetary expenditure.
Jack said Governor Fubara cannot excuse the misconducts on the fact that there were political disagreements in the state and should therefore answer to the charges.
The impeachment proceeding is another turn in the long story of political crises in Rivers State orchestrated by a disagreement between the governor and his estranged godfather , Nyesom Wike, since October 2023 when the same house of assembly members served a similar impeachment notice on him.

The crises that followed that move culminated in a state of emergency declared on March 18th 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, who lifted the emergency six months later supposed after a resolution of the crises between Fubara and Wike.
But things took a dramatic turn afterwards when the House of Assembly members refused to warm up to the Governor and there arise another lost lost situation between them.
The lull that followed was disrupted in the middle of last month when Fubara defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress and announced that he was now the leader of the APC in the state.
Wike returned to the state afterwards and said Fubara could not be the leader of APC in the state and took a tour of local governments where he appealed to ex-militant leaders, known to support the governor to stay away from political issues.

Many had waited to see Wike’s reaction after it felt like he had fallen out of favour with President Tinubu, whose body language seemed to be dancing in favour of Fubara.
This impeachment proceedings might just be one of the surprise that Wike might be suing to assert his capacity in the control of the politics of Rivers State.
It cannot be confirmed yet if the impeachment notice has been served on the governor who has been on a project commissioning tour of the state.
Reactions are now being expected from the governor’s camp, the streets of Port Harcourt as well as Abuja.
