The University of Port Harcourt has made tree planting a cardinal objective to contribute to the international campaign to fight global warming.
At a special ceremony just before its 34th convocation ceremonies, the best graduating student f the university, Osisi Upadhi Solomon, assisted by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, planted a tree at the university’s new convocation arena. Solomon had a 4.91 cumulative grade point aggregate.
At the convocation, which held between 23rd and 24th of February, the university conferred degrees on a total of 13,816 students.
Giving a breakdown of the awards, the vice-chancellor said 477 of the graduands bagged doctorate degrees, 1,528 bagged master’s degrees, 3,665 postgraduate diplomas and 8,146 were conferred with first degrees.
Prof. Georgewill said that it was cheering news for the university when it was ranked the 19th best university in Africa and first in Nigeria.
He said the university would do with more funding because of the ongoing international certification of many of its programmes.
The vice-chancellor commended the Federal Government, the Rivers State Government and other corporate organizations and individuals for support in the infrastructural development of the university. “These contributions have enabled it to enhance its infrastructure, expand its academic offerings, and improve the overall learning environment for students,” Prof Georgewill said.
He expressed delight that the university has been able to maintain peace since 2021 when he assumed office, with no student or staff protest despite serious challenges confronting the institution.
