A 48-year-old man in Benin City, Edo State capital, has allegedly hanged himself because he became partially blind.
Family members, neighbours and passers-by wept uncontrollably as they watched the dangling lifeless body of the victim in his room, at 37, Okhoro Road, Benin City, last Wednesday.
Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the time incident, said, “About 09:00hours on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Okhoro police station, Benin City received a complaint from the deceased’s brother one Alex Imasuen of the above address that his brother Moses Imasuen, 48, committed suicide by hanging himself on a ceiling fan in his room.
“The complainant stated that the said Moses Imasuen was a partially blind person and had been saying how he wished he could see death to remove him from the pains of being blind. The family has decided to remove the corpse for cleansing as it is a taboo in Benin culture.
“The police visited the scene of crime, took photographs of the scene. Meanwhile, the family has taken possession of the deceased body. There is no further investigation as it is a clear case of suicide.”
