For close to one year, Rivers State has been on fire politically after the immediate-past governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike fell out with the successor he pulled all stops to install, Siminalayi Fubara. The feud, which has gone to the Presidency and back with little positive result, has made the state a fierce battleground as politicians queuing on both sides, rob the state of both peace and progress, with the courts shamelessly exacerbating the situation with conflicting judgments to further confuse the people and prolonging the crisis.
While the state boils, the ruling party which both warring parties belong to, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, that ought to intervene and dowse the crisis fast as the umpire, has buried its head in the sand cowardly to act to caution a recalcitrant Wike who has been playing God and being above the party as he holds the reigns of the PDP in the state while openly controlling affairs in the All Progressives Congress, APC, an opposition party.
Wike’s open utterances narrating how he plotted to have all the political offices in the state in his two pockets using Rivers peoples money, for which reason Fubara must do all his biddings smack of uncommon ego ride and disrespect and total disregard for both the people of the state, whose mandates he is employing, and the party that gave him the platform to become what he is and play his pranks
He promised to make the state ungovernable if Fubara does not bow to his desires and has been doing just that. The state Assembly is factionalised and even the local government councils are being operated outside their secretariats, thereby hurting the flow of governance. Those who should speak are too afraid to do so, leaving the job to the likes of Chief Edwin Clark and the Hon Ugochinyere Group-60 National Assembly opposition members.
The nation has been waiting to see the PDP act but nothing has happened. And the boldness with which the FCT minister is now challenging the party to dare and discipline him depicts the possibility that beyond his having fought hard in the past to keep the party afloat with Rivers State funds, some elements in the top echelon of the party must have been compromised, causing him to exhibit ceaseless effrontery in the brazen challenge of both the party and his people, the constituency he derives his power from.
Persons of high political standing in both the PDP and the APC as well.as other parties have been sanctioned by their parties for lesser anti-party acts, even as Wike’s acts against Fubara continue to undermine both the PDP and Rivers State
It is obvious that rumours of a possible move away to another party by the embattled Fubara who has been receiving bullets without any shield from his supposed party, caused the board of trustees of the party to rush down to Port Harcourt and promise action. The Senator Adolphus Wabara-led BoT has promised that the issue will be settled constitutionally and we wait. Wike himself has announced that he would no longer support Fubara. He should move on like Tinubu over Rauf Aregbesola and Adams Oshiomhole over Obaseki; the earth should not burn. The country is in turmoil and so, our leaders should concentrate on delivering good governance.
Rivers citizens are tired of the effect of this battle and want an end so Fubara can execute the mandate given to him by the people in the interest of the development of the state.
